Scouting Sunrise
Over 40 of Marple Scouts' members (inluding explorers, scouts, leaders, and even a beaver!) watched the sun rise from Cobden Edge (The Cross) and celebrated 100 years of Scouting!
It was a long night / morning for all involved, with the Scouts grabbing at most an hours sleep before being woken up at 3 o clock in the morning to get kitted up and ready to go.
It only took an hour and a half for the Scouts to scale the heights of Cobden Edge, and before we knew it we were stood around the Cross in the darkness, waiting for the sun to creep over the hills in the distance.
Once we'd had flag-break (with the leaders expertly putting up a mobile flag-pole) we had a short service to help us remember what else was going on around the world, and remember the Scout promise which we had all made when we first joined Scouting. It was apt that eight new Kinder-boys were invested on the top - something they will remember for teh rest of their lives.
Over 28 million Scouts worldwide would have held similar services on the day - the largest mass event involving mainly young people.
Once the service was over, we were all traeted to a barbeque-between-nine, and the Scouts ran off into the ex-quarry to find suitable spots to make breakfast on.
When the sun finally rose over the hill we were called back up for a momentous photo to commemorate 100 years, and then it was straight back down to put bacon, burgers and fancy chicken kebabs on the BBQ. Thankfully the kebabs were pre-cooked so the scouts had less chance of poisoning themselves than usual!
A dreary walk back home showed that everyone was feeling teh effects of the all-nighter, but it was well worth the effort!
